Preparing for the electrical exam can be a daunting task, especially if it has been a while since you have been in a learning environment. With so much going on in our lives, such as family, and work, it can be challenging to find time to study.
Recently, I talked with someone who had just taken their test and scored 69, missing the passing score by only one point. Although they were disappointed, they also recognized that the test-taking experience helped them tremendously.
They were able to fly through the questions and found that the math section, in particular, was fresh in their mind. They remembered the material for transformers and residential calculations but acknowledged that a refresher course would be helpful.
The math questions on the exam were unique, covering topics like transformers, motors, residential ranges, and service-related calculations. The test also included conduit fill, box fill, and wire size calculations. The individual found themselves struggling the most with the calculations and using a calculator to size items. They mentioned that they did well on the other sections of the exam but struggled with the middle section, which required actual calculations.
Overall, the experience taught them that the key to success in the exam is getting started. Once they clicked and remembered where to find information in the code book, the next steps were more manageable. It’s essential to recognize that it’s normal to get a question and feel like a deer in headlights. It’s natural to second-guess yourself, and it’s essential to take a deep breath, relax, and focus.
Preparing for the electrical exam takes time and effort, but it’s doable with the right mindset and resources. By acknowledging areas that require more attention, taking a refresher course, and practicing your calculations, you can increase your chances of passing the exam. Remember that a near-miss is still an opportunity to learn and grow.
