Inside a warehouse in metro Atlanta, possibility is buzzing — literally. From pulling wire through metal conduit to wiring outlets and drilling in their first receptacles, young trainees are learning how to build careers from the ground up.
It’s all part of Career Ready ATL, a workforce initiative backed by the United Way of Greater Atlanta and the Georgia Building Trades Academy (GABTA). Through the YouthBuild Pre-Apprenticeship Program, students ages 16 to 24 are getting free training, credentials and direct access to high-paying jobs in Georgia’s construction and logistics industries.
“Just being able to work with my hands and see things light up,” said Jamari, a student who recently helped teach 11Alive Anchor Cheryl Preheim how to wire an outlet. “It’s like making the magic happen.”
