Creating a personalized and effective study plan is one of the most important steps toward passing your electrical licensing exam.
It doesn't matter if you're taking the journeyman or master exam, what matters is your approach. A well-thought-out strategy will not only keep you focused, but it will also help you manage your time, reduce stress, and improve your understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC).
Many electricians underestimate the power of planning. They think reviewing the NEC and doing a few practice questions is enough. But if you want to pass on your first try and walk in with confidence, you need to get organized and be intentional with how you study. That begins with building your study plan.
Start with Clear Goals and Objectives
Before you even crack open your NEC book, outline what you want to accomplish. These are your study goals. Then, break each goal down into smaller, measurable objectives. For example:
- Goal: Master the subject area of transformers.
- Objective: Read Article 450 and understand Table 450.3(A), which covers maximum rating or setting of overcurrent protection for transformers over 1000 volts.
Once you've listed out your goals and objectives, rank them in order. Start with your weakest subject areas first and work your way up to the stronger ones. For example, if you're studying for one hour in the morning, spend 30 minutes reading and 30 minutes doing practice questions. Repeat in the evening if possible.
Adapt the Plan to Your Life
Every electrician’s schedule looks different, so don’t feel like your plan has to match someone else’s. If you’re a morning person, plan to wake up early and study before work. If your quiet time comes in the evening after dinner, use that time instead. It’s not about how many hours you study, but how consistent and focused you are during those sessions.
The key is to stay realistic and honest about your time. Don’t build a plan that requires five hours of study every day if you know that’s not going to happen. Instead, carve out one or two focused hours per day and make them count.
Track Your Progress and Stay Flexible
Once you start working through your study plan, monitor your progress. Are you completing your assigned readings? Are your scores on practice exams improving? If not, adjust your priorities. Spend more time on the subject areas where you are scoring low.
You might find that your biggest challenge isn’t reading the NEC, but rather understanding how to navigate it during the timed exam. That’s a skill worth practicing. The more you work through code look-up questions and timed practice exams, the faster and more accurate you’ll become.
Interruptions will happen. Life gets in the way sometimes. Having a written plan gives you the ability to pick up where you left off. Without a plan, you're more likely to waste time trying to figure out what to study next.
The Value of a Base Sheet
One helpful tool we recommend is creating a “base sheet” for your daily study plan. This is a checklist or template you use each day to organize what topics or articles you'll cover, how much time you’ll spend on each, and what practice questions you’ll complete. Having this written out helps keep you focused and ensures that you're spending time on what matters most.
A base sheet might look something like this:
- Article Focus: Article 250 (Grounding and Bonding)
- Reading Time: 30 minutes
- Practice Questions: 15 questions from grounding and bonding section
- Review Time: 15 minutes to highlight code references and make notes
Repeat this format for each topic throughout the week. As you go, update your sheet to reflect progress and adjust your time blocks as needed.
Avoid the 90% Trap
In our experience, only about 10 percent of exam takers actually take the time to create a detailed study plan. The other 90 percent walk into the test center wondering where all the time went. They may have studied, but without a clear direction. A written plan doesn’t just keep you organized—it gives you peace of mind that you are doing everything you can to succeed.

Must-Study Topics and Articles in the NEC
While your study plan should be customized to your strengths and weaknesses, there are certain NEC topics and Articles that consistently appear on licensing exams and deserve extra attention. These are the high-yield areas where many exam questions are drawn from:
- Article 90 – Understand the purpose, scope, and arrangement of the NEC. It sets the foundation for the entire Code.
- Article 100 – Master definitions. Many exam questions rely on your understanding of specific terms.
- Article 110 – Requirements for electrical installations. This is frequently tested in both journeyman and master exams.
- Chapter 2: Wiring and Protection – Especially Articles 200, 210, 215, 220, 225, and 250. Article 250 (Grounding and Bonding) is one of the most heavily tested sections.
- Chapter 3: Wiring Methods and Materials – Articles 300 through 392. Pay special attention to conductor fill, box fill, and conduit sizing rules.
- Chapter 4: Equipment for General Use – Focus on Articles 400 through 450, particularly transformers (Article 450) and motors (Article 430).
- Chapter 5: Special Occupancies – Mobile homes, marinas, recreational vehicles, and healthcare facilities are common topics.
- Chapter 6: Special Equipment – Articles on swimming pools (680), electric vehicle charging (625), and other specialty systems often appear.
- Chapter 9 and Annexes – Tables for conductor properties, conduit fill, and voltage drop are frequently referenced. Know how to navigate them.
It’s also wise to be familiar with how to use the index and table of contents efficiently and understand how to quickly locate informational notes, exceptions, and mandatory language like "shall" vs. "shall be permitted."
Focusing your study time on these core topics will significantly improve your speed and confidence on exam day.
